So my whole life I wanted to either be a musician or a comedian. Where I grew up, there wasn't anywhere to do comedy within a 90 minutes drive, so I did the music deal. I sucked at it. Like really bad.
Two years ago I'd just moved to the area and I saw on twitter that one of my favorite comedians Dan St. Germain was going to be at the Blue Whale Comedy Festival in Tulsa, Ok. So my best friend and I made the couple hour drive to watch him and we had a blast, I'd never laughed that hard in my life.
The next day, we saw there was a "Comedians Roundtable", so we decided to go check it out. It was there that I heard Michelle Wolf go into great detail about her writing process. The next night I saw her perform and she was absolutely hilarious and I got to see everything that she had talked about in her writing process come out in her performance.
That changed everything for me. I'd tried writing stand-up in high school, I tried in College, I tried every couple years after, but it just wasn't good. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I could just tell, it would be very "meh" if I actually ever tried an open mic.
But after hearing Michelle talk, it was like a light went off in my head. Suddenly, I saw what I was doing wrong in my writing. I made the commitment right then to go home, write as much as I could and finally give comedy a try.
I did some looking and I found Comedians NWA in Fayetteville, which was only an hour from the town I'd just moved to. I did an open mic 3 weeks later and before I knew it, I had myself a second family in Comedians NWA that have given me the best two years of my life.
But as I was leaving Blue Whale two years ago as a crowd member, I made one big goal for myself. "One day I want to come to this festival as a performer". Two years later, I am.
So to say that I'm excited to do Blue Whale Comedy Festival this year is a bit an understatement.
So I just want to say thanks to Michelle Wolf and everyone else who helped me along the way. (Except Zac Slusher... fuck that guy)
If you are going to be at the festival and want to catch the show I'm on with Brian Moses and Nick Vatterott, here's the link for the tickets: https://www.ticketfly.com/…/1513150-brian-moses-nick-vatte…/
I will hopefully see you all there!
